What legal engineers do

Legal engineers build and set up the technology your firm or legal department runs on. For example, they can:

  • automate intake, document assembly or matter workflows;
  • connect your practice-management system to other software;
  • set up and tune AI tools for your team's work;
  • train your staff to use what they build.

They don't provide legal services. Through Counsel Commons™, an engineer never gives legal advice, represents anyone, or drafts documents for a specific matter, even if they are a licensed attorney. They can build the templates and tools your lawyers then use and review.

How hiring an engineer works

  1. Find an engineer. Compare services, prices and ratings from past paid projects.
  2. Send a request. Describe what you need on their profile, and they'll get in touch.
  3. Agree the scope. The engineer sends a statement of work. Accept it online and it becomes your contract.
  4. Pay as you go. Pay per milestone for fixed-price work, or weekly for hourly work, and track hours and spend in your dashboard. You can ask for payments to go through Escrow.com, at your own cost.
  5. Approve the work. Approve each delivery or ask for changes.
  6. Leave a review. Rate whether the work was on time, as scoped and on budget.

What Counsel Commons does, and doesn't

  • We list engineers, review their listings, and check their identity. That isn't an endorsement of their skill, so do your own vendor and security review.
  • We provide the SOW templates, online acceptance, invoicing and project dashboard.
  • Payments go straight from you to the engineer: through Stripe, or the engineer's own invoice where Stripe isn't available, or through Escrow.com if you ask for it (at your own cost). We never hold your money and take no share of it; engineers pay a flat fee for their profile.
  • We don't decide disagreements about the work. Those follow the escalation steps in your SOW.
